Mr Mitchell's quite wonderful wall
William Mitchell Mural
The third stage of the Ring Road built in 1972/73 required a significant retaining wall to be constructed. William Mitchell an abstract sculptor was commissioned to design and cast a series of elaborate panels in concrete to decorate the wall.
The mural is some 300 metres long, 11 metres high at its tallest point and has a surface area of some 2100 square metres. In recognition of its status as a major piece of post war public art it was listed by Historic England in 2020.
A waterfall which was an part of the original design but which had ceased to operate was reinstated in 2021.
